Smile, Guy
Marc Twang's’ 1998 C.D. spans a 15 year period of recordings made with
nearly forty different musicians and back-up singers. His usual wry-wit
commentaries are complemented with sound effects and an effervescent
musicality from the eclectic back-up bands as well as Marc's
appropriately capricious mouth harp.
Relationships, cars, the rape of the environment, a satire on "success",
the politics of greed, a seasonal instrumental and a testament to the
Titanic make up this 12-tune compilation. The cover photo and the
corresponding title, "Smile, Guy", suggest that perhaps there is not
that much to really smile about! The good news is Twang's’ uncanny
ability to get this message across without devastating us with the truth,
as he sees it. Ultimately, the album has an almost festive quality, due
in part to its intrinsic humor and to the fresh, perky arrangements.
